Latex grips best when it is not dry.
A goalkeeper glove holds the ball with the latex on the palm. Dry latex — a warm pitch, a hard surface, a glove that has seen a season — loses its tack, and that is when the ball squirms out of the hands.
Glove Grip is water-based and made to improve the adhesion of the latex. Two to four sprays across each palm, half a minute, and the surface has its bite back — a few minutes more and it is better still. It works on a new pair and it brings a worn pair back into use.
What it cannot do is rescue latex that is already gone. Once the palm is split or worn smooth, no spray brings it back — that is a new pair of gloves, not a bottle.
How to apply it.
- Shake the bottle. The palms should be dry and clean — wet or muddy latex takes nothing.
- Spray two to four times onto each palm.
- Wait 30 seconds — or up to 10 minutes for the strongest grip.
- Play.
Do not rub the gloves against each other after applying. The formula is tack — rubbing the palms together drags it straight off again and wears the latex for nothing. Let them rest instead.
Thirty seconds is enough to go out and play, but the layer keeps settling into the latex for a few minutes after that — so spray as you get changed rather than as you walk onto the pitch.
Spray before kick-off and again at half time. More is not better: too much leaves a sticky film on the latex instead of grip.
After the game, rinse the gloves in cool water and dry them flat, away from sun and radiators. Grip spray is no substitute for washing them — dirt in the latex is what kills grip fastest.

Will it ruin the latex?
No. The formula is water-based and works with the latex rather than coating it. What actually wears gloves out is dry heat, gloves that are never washed, and using far too much spray — a heavy dose leaves a sticky film instead of grip. Two to four sprays per palm is the whole job, and leaving the palms to rest instead of rubbing them together saves the latex as well.
How long does the grip last in a game?
Expect it to hold through a half. That is how grip sprays work — the layer sits on the surface and comes off against the ball, the ground and your shirt. Spray again at half time and you have it for the full ninety. If it feels gone after ten minutes, the palms were probably still wet or dirty when you sprayed.
Does it work in the rain?
Yes — wet, dry or cold. Two things help in heavy rain: spray onto dry palms before you go out, and give them the full ten minutes rather than thirty seconds, so the layer has settled before the first ball arrives. In steady rain expect to reapply more often than on a dry day.
How long does a bottle last?
At two to four sprays per palm, a 120 ml bottle covers a few months of weekly matches and training. Spraying again at half time every game will get you through it faster.
Does it work on old gloves?
That is what it is made for. Latex loses its tack with use, and the spray brings the surface back. It cannot repair latex that is torn or worn smooth — no spray can.
Is it allowed in matches?
The Laws of the Game cover gloves as player equipment and say nothing about grip products. As always, the referee has the final say on equipment before kick-off.
